Project Description

Current Use : The Charmant Hotel

"When the building went up for sale in 2012, La Crosse developer Don Weber said his first concern was that the downtown could lose a historic landmark. He and his family purchased it for $1.5 million with a plan to preserve it.
The building’s size, location and features made it a perfect fit, said Vince Micha, the project architect.
“This is not just a hotel,” Weber said. “It’s going to be a destination.”
Renovating a 117-year-old candy factory is not without challenges. Like how to get the molasses out of the maple floor boards so they can be reused. Or brick walls that aren’t quite square.
Micha went out of his way to preserve historic architectural elements -- from exposed dolomite foundations and brick walls to the wood ceilings that helped insulate the dipping floor in days before air conditioning -- and incorporate the building’s history into the hotel design. On the wall in the lone finished room are tins that once held candy from the factory." - La Crosse Tribune
